South Bend, a Top Location

The South Bend Area is the nation’s 145th largest metropolitan statistical area, with about 316,000 people. Despite its moderate size, it has been on a number of best cities lists, including:

As much as I am fond of South Bend, in its own gritty way, this is rather disingenuous. South Bend is included on the lists of “Best Places to Live” and “Best Places to Retire” as part of a huge database of cities from which the best ones are chosen. It is there, in other words, for comparison purposes, rather than because it has been singled out for any special distinction. It has not even been ranked in any way at all!

You make a good point Robert. Thank you. South Bend is one of 14 Indiana cities in CNN’s database, but hasn’t been singled out for high praise. I’ll strike through their links on the list.

You’re welcome – and I’d just like to add that, regardless of the databases, South Bend is a fine place to live; we’ve been very happy here for 4 years, living in a house we could not have afforded anywhere else in the nation.

Well done on a fine blog – I’m away from home for a few months, so it’s nice to be able to check up on happenings back home!
