Now that the other theater in downtown South Bend is well on its way to revival, we can focus on the Avon Theater at 319 South Michigan. It was originally called “The Strand” when built around 1926, and went through periods showing mainstream, art house and adult films. It ceased operations sometime in the 1970’s. The South Bend Civic Theater Group flirted with the Avon before settling on the Scottish Rite Building a few blocks to the North. The Avon Theater is still for sale by Downtown South Bend, Inc.

  1. Cool. That’s some good research and history on that cinema site! It would be really cool rehabbed to an independent or foreign film theatre like the Vickers in Three Oaks.

  2. That is a great idea for the Avon Theater, South Bend/Mishawaka needs a site for independent and foreign movies. Now it just needs investors!
