The idea is to make possible an appealing house that is less expensive, more durable, and completed more quickly with less skilled labor than traditionally built homes.<\/p>\n<p>This is not a new idea. After World War II, Carl Strandlund developed a mostly metal home, the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lustron_house\" target=\"_blank\">Lustron House<\/a> that \u00a0was built on an assembly line, delivered on a truck, and promised to &#8220;defy weather, wear and time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Lustron Corporation quickly\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lustron.org\/film.htm\" target=\"_blank\">ended in bankruptcy<\/a>, but there are three Lustrons in South Bend.
