What is South Bend?

Take this list for what it’s worth. Those are my first thoughts fleshed out with a bit of Web research. Disagree? Post a comment and I’ll revise the list with the most common and most interesting responses.

  1. SB is a good place to raise a family. The housing market is fair. The airport is ample but not too big, it has easy access to Chicago without paying those prices. Shopping, eating and schools are convenient. Notre Dame gives it athletics and the Morris gives it the arts. The lakes are close by for summer entertainment. The crime rate is reasonable. The families are still morally and ethically conservative.

  2. I left SB about 22 years ago. When I think of SB I think of what I left behind and that is family & a sense of community. Even though this isn’t SB I also think fondly of Lake Michigan.

  3. South Bend is a diverse community, offering an array of atractive features that are good for raising a family.Afordable housing is one of the main attractions.

  4. When I think of South Bend I think of family and good times growing up. I think South Bend’s unique location makes it a great place to live- it is within a few hours of Chicago, boating on Lake Michigan and skiing in Northern Michigan.

  5. People, people, people. Family, friends, and then I’d also say: family and friends. Oh yes, and Notre Dame. To me this is where people anchor their hearts. When I leave, part of me never leaves, and I can only celebrate that part of me when I return. As others have said, it’s a great place for families, both for quality of family life, and for the ability to earn a living and support that family.

Sometimes people leave SB for very specific reasons (usually specialty career reasons, or to make sure that corn fields aren’t a sign of “missing out on the cutting edge of things”, so they try to make sure that their horizons aren’t too unknowingly limited to the typical midwestern conservatisms). But then they return, or find that their hearts never really, totally, left the area when they did. I think it’s because, in the long run, most come to appreciate family and friends over trends.

If I had to condense a description of an area down to one word, which is normally about impossible, I find I have no difficulty at all with South Bend. One word: People.

  6. A good “base”. It’s a great place to have been raised, maybe go away for the career or explorations, and then return to raise your own family. It’s a good place to earn a living, and be able to afford explorations to many other places, and then return to a comfortable home and great friends. A good place to be able to access the bigger cities & lake country, without having to live with the congestion or tourism daily. A place, where if you seek them out, you are able to enjoy cultural events and good careers, great friends & unique restaurants, beautiful parks and welcoming libraries, ample shopping and nice neighborhoods…

  7. Does anyone know anything about the Edison development project near notre dame? are condos projected to be part of this development?

  8. As a pinpoint on the planet South Bend appears insignificant. As a home that is middle America it is anything but that. Affordable housing, middle America values, people who smile and stop to help each other if in need, South Bend represents to me people who care. We have the best homeless center in the nation which is a model to many. five Universities, hospitals which are becoming state of the art and neighborhoods where people still know each other and stand up for what is right. This is home and a wonderful place to raise a family.
