Map of South Bend's Historic DistrictsSouth Bend dates back to 1831, and 175 years later has eleven historic districts with rules preserving the appearance of homes in the area. The rules vary from district to district but generally prevent you from altering the exterior of your house without approval from the Historic District Commission.

A detailed Map of South Bend’s Historic Districts is available online. Historical Information and Current Rules for each district are also online. If you have further questions you should contact the Historic Preservation Committee of St Joseph County, 574-235-9798.

  1. My name is Jim Piechorowski and I am working with Scott Schuler, Archivist at the Center for History in the development of a project to Define the Social – Economic Impact of the 18th-19th Century Immigrant to our city.

We are currently attempting to identify the Historic South Bend Neighborhoods of the early 19th century.

I would like to talk with anyone interested in defining the original neighborhoods and thier social, religious and economic impact on our city.

The St Louis Historic Neighborhood site below will give you an idea of what we would like to accomplish for South Bend

Anyone out there who is interested please sound off….
