South Bend Real Estate
Historic charm and new urbanism find a home together in South Bend. The pioneer city, named by 19th-century settlers for the southernmost turn in the St. Joseph River, has a rich manufacturing history. The Studebaker brothers founded their wagon-making firm before the Civil War, and Oliver Chilled Plow Works, Singer and others thrived along the river.
The captains of industry built the stately neighborhoods constantly renewed by generations of reverent restoration, with slate roofs and glittering leaded glass still marking the genteel leafy estates. South Bend was multicultural before diversity was cool, attracting Polish, Hungarian, Italian, Jewish, German, and other international immigrants who established a rich variety of flourishing neighborhoods.
These days, the industries are tending toward the high-tech, with discoveries nurtured at Innovation Park at Notre Dame already moving to Ignition Park in the transformed Studebaker factory corridor. Memorial Health System, a national leader in healthcare innovation, helps anchor the downtown’s north side. Modern shopping districts are within easy reach north and south.
Diversity still flourishes, with many newcomers now from Spanish-speaking and Asian nations. Old neighborhoods, with a wide array of Craftsman, Victorian, Frank Lloyd Wright and other notable styles, and refashioned downtown school and retail buildings are filling with new residents. New developments, including riverbank condominiums and infill boulevard homes, are rising.
The public school system has developed magnet concentrations in medicine, technology, engineering and other specialties, and educational choices include a strong parochial system and award-winning private schools. New urbanism pioneers, a well-established Community Foundation, and forward-looking business and civic leaders brings energetic commitments to propel South Bend past the challenges common to such communities and fashion a 21st Century City.
