The East Race area was developed at a high cost and it appears along the shopping stretch of Michigan Street The Chocolate Cafe is growing to join the block party before Notre Dame football games. However, East Race & Howard Park remain high drug, crime and homosexual areas. South bend is looking better, but remains a slum overall.

Perhaps South Bend should market itself as many of the Chicago suburbs have (Arlington Heights, Elgin, Palatine, etc.) I have just recently visited these suburbs, and their downtowns have undergone amazing renewal usually focused around the commuter train station. Add another South Short stop to downtown!

I've worked downtown for a few years and am excited to see some positive changes. Additional restaurants would be a huge plus. I imagine those will naturally come along with the condo developments. And I've hear the Chocolate Cafe's expansion will include some sort of a mini mart. This is great for all of us that walked to the old Oscos in the middle of the day for basic pharmacy\store needs.
