South Bend may not have a Park-Hyatt or a Hilton, but it has a variety of accommodations from no frills to plush. These are among the best:

  1. While in town for business that is not downtown South Bend, there are several hotels near the Windsor Park Conference Center and Edison Lakes Office Park in Mishawaka.

The closest, and a nice option would be the Varsity Clubs of America at 3080 N Main (corner of Main & Edison Lakes Parkway in Mishawaka). Their number is 574.277.0500.

Las we checked, their quoted rate (if you specify you want the ‘corporate rate’) is $105/night for a 1 bedroom suite; You can usually find a cheaper rate online at orbitz or the like.

You need to specify if you want a room for wireless connection when you make the reservation, because not all of their rooms have wireless.

A couple of other nearby options would be the Marriott brand hotels 800-228-9290:

    Spring Hill Suites South Bend/Mishawaka
    5225 Edison Lakes Parkway
    Mishawaka , IN 46545

    Courtyard Marriott
    4825 N Main Street
    Mishawaka , IN 46545

  2. You could also consider purchasing a hotel-condo in the area.

Varsity Clubs offers a deeded timeshare, securing you a home for your favorite ND weekend forever. Pricing is $15,995.

Waterford Estates Lodge, located on 933 North just minutes from ND, is a conversion/renovation from a Ramada into a hotel-condo.

Gameday expects to begin construction soon on a twelve story building with a public/private parking garage on the first six levels and 150 luxury condominiums on the top six. In addition, there will be 12,000 sq. ft. of retail space available on the ground floor.

Suites will range in price from the $180’s through $1 million, and will have all of the amenities necessary to enhance the “Gameday” experience, with 7-days-a-week concierge-style management and an optional rental program for owners, which is anticipated to help provide an additional 100 hotel rooms in the downtown area. When construction is complete, owners and guests alike will enjoy the advantages of easy access to the Notre Dame campus, Century Center, and some of the best entertainment and restaurant venues that South Bend has to offer. It is anticipated that construction will completed in time for the 2007 Notre Dame football season.

  3. Definitely give the Sandpiper Inn a try! Even at a 45 minute drive, the views of the beach and Lake Michigan from your room are breathtaking! And the sound of the waves at night are like a natural sleep aid.

If you really want to stay more local, most of my out-of-town colleagues stay at the Inn at St. Mary’s when visiting. I’ve never been in it, but most seem to enjoy it except for the fact they don’t have a restaurant.

  4. We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express by Notre Dame and we loved it. Great price it came with breakfast and they really go out–staff was really nice in breakfast area. We parked our car there and just walked to notre dame for game was like a one 1/2 miles but it was nice got to check out the homes around campus, and stopped to that new downtown area on eddy street..had few beers and we were all good..Best stay though is the Holiday Inn Express you save with close by and free eats for breakfast-scrambled eggs and bacon….Dont waste money for parking…people will try to charge like $40 bucks!
